I refuse to trade my kids' childhood just to keep up with the bills

October 12, 2026by Mark Dayton

I don't want to look back in ten years and realize I traded my kids' childhood just to keep up with the bills.

That thought has been sitting with me for a while now. It shows up when I pull into the driveway after a long shift, hear the kids playing inside, and realize all I've got left for them is the leftover scraps of my energy.

Too many guys get caught in the trap of providing for their family by sacrificing all the time they're supposed to spend with them. We tell ourselves it's temporary. Just get through this season. Just pick up a few more hours. Then the season turns into a year, and the year turns into a decade.

I don't want to be one of those guys. So I started looking into how to make money online. And I found something I'm genuinely fired up about.

The trap most dads are stuck in

Here's the math most of us live with. More money means more hours. More hours means less time at home. And less time at home is the exact thing we're working so hard to fix.

I've clocked in 40 to 50 hours a week for years. I know the sore back, the empty tank, and the feeling of looking at the calendar and realizing another month just vanished into someone else's bottom line.

If that's you right now, I'm not judging. You're keeping a roof over your family's head, and that matters. But somewhere along the way I realized there had to be a smarter way to provide than trading my whole life for an hourly rate.

Why I was skeptical

I've been in affiliate and network marketing long enough to know how most of these models work. The commissions are thin, people only buy the products to stay qualified, and the strategy comes down to cold DMs and bugging friends and family.

You can work hard in that setup and still get a check that doesn't match the effort. You bust your tail to build something up, only to watch half of it vanish on the first of the month. It feels like sprinting on a treadmill where the incline keeps going up.

And I've got the scars to prove it. I've joined things that fizzled out. I've lost money on tools that overpromised. I've told my wife "this one's going to be different" and ended up right back at square one with an empty wallet and a bruised ego.

So when I came across this, I was skeptical. I've seen enough hype to last a lifetime.

The 3 questions I ask before I join anything

After getting burned enough times, I stopped asking "Is this exciting?" and started asking three simple questions:

  1. Does it teach me real skills I'll own forever? Not a script or a recruiting trick. Skills like building an audience, creating content and communicating like a real human.
  2. Does it build an asset that works without me chasing people? If the only plan is messaging everyone I know, I'm out.
  3. Does the income compound, or does it reset? If I start from zero every month, it's not a business. It's a treadmill.

If the answer to any of those is no, it's a scheme dressed up as an opportunity. That filter has saved me a lot of time, and time is the one thing I can't get back.

What changed my mind

Honestly? It was the math first, and the people second.

The commissions are 80% and recurring, with no rank requirements and no pass-ups. That means a small number of customers can matter a lot, because each one keeps paying month after month instead of starting over. I ran the numbers more than once because I'd never seen a model where the math actually worked for the person building it.

Then I dug deeper. They've been in business 10 years with the same founders, and the comp plan has never changed. The tools are real, and people use them every day to run their businesses, which means they stick around. And the founders are on live coaching calls five days a week. You can't fake that.

What sealed it was the leaders and the community. You can tell pretty fast whether people want to build with you or just recruit you. These guys show up, teach, and put people first.

That's when I said, "Okay. This is a real business I can actually build. I'm in."

Who I'm doing this for

I'm doing this for my family first, and for myself second.

For my wife and kids, it's about real financial breathing room and being truly present. Being there for the moments that matter. Taking family vacations without stressing over every dollar on the statement. Not going off to a corporate job.

For me, it's about freedom and self-respect. I refuse to spend the rest of my life trading 40 to 60 hours a week for a paycheck that barely moves the needle.

What success looks like to me

Success for me isn't about flashing fancy cars or fake hype. It's about:

  • Freedom and breathing room
  • A business that compounds instead of resets
  • Complete control over my calendar

It's knowing the work I put in months ago is still paying us today. Most of all, I'm leaving behind the compromise of having to choose between providing for my family and actually being present with them.

My advice if you've been burned before

If I could go back and tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: the next opportunity isn't going to fix what was broken in the last one. Stop jumping ship and look at the actual math.

Every time you switch, your clock resets to zero. Find a foundation where the numbers work for the builder, plant your feet, learn the skills, and stay in the game long enough for the compound effect to do its job.

If you've failed before, you're in good company. I have too. What matters is that you don't quit.

What you'll see from me next

You'll be seeing some different posts from me as I share what I'm learning. It's me going on a new journey, and I hope what I discover can help others along the way.

And don't worry, I won't be chasing you or bugging you to join anything. That's one of the things I really like about this: they teach you to help the people who want the help and only show those who want to see. It's not even low pressure; it's no pressure, and I love that.

Regardless, thanks for reading, and I hope you have an awesome day.
