Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: The Step-by-Step Path I Wish I'd Had

October 23, 2026by Mark Dayton

Affiliate marketing is when you recommend someone else's product with your own tracking link, and you earn a commission when someone buys through it. You don't create the product, handle the checkout or ship anything. Your job is to connect the right people with something that helps them.

That's the simple version. The hard part is everything nobody tells beginners: where to find people, what to say, and how to follow up. I spent about ten years figuring that out the expensive way, buying courses and joining programs that never paid me back.

This is the step-by-step path I wish someone had handed me on day one.

Disclosure: I'm an independent OLSP affiliate and may earn a commission if you join through my links. Results vary and aren't guaranteed.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

There are three players:

  • The company that owns the product and handles the sale.
  • You, the affiliate, who shares a special tracking link.
  • The customer, who clicks your link and buys.

Your link tells the company the sale came from you. You get a commission, and the customer pays the same price they would anyway.

Think of it like recommending a great restaurant to a friend, except the restaurant thanks you every time someone you sent orders dinner.

How Do Affiliates Get Paid?

Commissions come in a few common shapes:

  • A percentage of the sale. Physical products often pay a small percentage. Digital products usually pay much more, because there's no inventory or shipping.
  • A flat amount per sale or sign-up.
  • Recurring commissions on memberships or software, paid every month the customer stays.

For beginners, I like low-priced digital offers. It's a lot easier to get someone to try something for $7 than to pitch them a $2,000 program. That's a big reason I switched to the offer I promote now.

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: 7 Steps

Step 1: Pick One Simple Offer

Choose one offer and stick with it. Look for something you can explain in one sentence, at a low starting price, with training and support included. Juggling five programs at once was one of my biggest mistakes. My attention was split five ways and none of them worked.

Step 2: Get the Result Yourself First

Use what you're promoting before you talk about it. Once you've gotten a result yourself, you don't need a script. You just tell people what happened, and people can feel the difference between someone selling and someone sharing.

Step 3: Pick One Free Traffic Source

Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, a blog. Pick one and learn it well before adding another. I started with Facebook because I was already there every day. Paid ads can come later, once you know what works.

Step 4: Send People to a Capture Page, Not a Sales Page

A capture page asks for a name and email before sending someone on. For years I sent people straight to a sales page, and if they weren't ready that second, they were gone. Building your list from day one is the single change I'd make if I started over.

Step 5: Follow Up by Email

Most people don't say yes the first time. They say yes after hearing from you several times. A simple series of helpful emails does that follow-up for you, even while you're at work or with your family.

Step 6: Be a Resource, Not a Salesman

Post things that help: what you learned, what worked, what didn't. Answer questions. Start real conversations. Commissions come from helping the right person at the right time, not from pasting your link everywhere. More on that in Be a Resource, Not a Salesman.

Step 7: Track What Works and Stay Consistent

Add a simple tracking tag to each link so you know which post or video brought in each lead. Then do more of what works. Small, daily actions beat big bursts followed by weeks of nothing.

Beginner Mistakes That Cost Me Years

  • Collecting courses instead of doing. I had a whole graveyard of half-watched training. The problem was never too little information.
  • Waiting to learn everything first. You learn faster by doing small, real tasks. I wrote about this in Why "Learn First, Earn Later" Is Backwards.
  • Expensive programs with hoops to qualify. Big buy-ins and tiny commissions burned me out.
  • No follow-up. One shot at every visitor, and most of them gone for good.

How Much Does It Cost to Start, and How Long Does It Take?

You can start affiliate marketing for free or close to it. Many programs are free to join, and free traffic only costs your time. The offer I use starts with a free training pass and a $7 link.

How long it takes is the honest part: nobody can promise a number or a timeline. It depends on your effort and consistency. What helps most is a clear path and live guidance, so you're not guessing what the work is.

The Simplest Way I Know to Start

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners FAQ

What is affiliate marketing in simple terms?
You share a tracking link to someone else's product, and you earn a commission when someone buys through your link.
Can a complete beginner do affiliate marketing?
Yes. You don't need tech skills or experience. A simple offer, one traffic source and a clear plan are enough to begin.
Do I need a website?
No. Many affiliates use social media, video or email instead. A capture page helps, and some systems include one.
Can I do affiliate marketing from my phone?
Yes. Posting, messaging, sharing your link and joining live training all work from a phone.
How much can a beginner make?
There's no honest typical number. Earnings depend on your effort, consistency and the offer. Be wary of anyone who promises a figure.
